HTC have already committed to a mid-2008 release for handsets using Android. As reported recently, HTC was persuaded to drop Windows mobile OS and made Omni into Google's Android demo phone.
The Taiwanese handset maker became the first company, among the members of the Open Handset Alliance, to admit to developing a mobile phone based on Android. Google just announced that over 30 companies had joined the alliance.
The open source software platform could become a potent new rival to Windows Mobile, Symbian and other handset operating systems.
The HTC Dream was rumored to include some iPhone features-like such as full touchscreen interface and onscreen keyboard.
As announced recently, HTC Omni/Dream has a few interesting things:
- time-sensitive touch gestures: Hold down your finger longer, and the area you're controlling expands
- easy navigation with icons for e-mail, text documents and YouTube along the top of the screen
- virtual machine for true multitasking. Applications can launch once during a session, then reside in the background
- it should go into production soon and start shipping next summer.
